What is general Dentistry?

General dentistry is the foundation of a lifetime of healthy smiles. As your primary dental care providers in Barbados, we are responsible for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of a wide range of conditions affecting your teeth, gums, and jaw. We coordinate oral health services for patients of all ages—from toddlers to seniors—ensuring that everyone in your entire family receives the comprehensive care they need under one roof.

General dentistry is for everyone who values a healthy, strong smile. Selecting the right person to care for your family’s health takes careful consideration, and we believe a good dentist combines clinical expertise with warmth and genuine concern. If you are looking for a practice where your goals are heard, where you are included in treatment decisions, and where the focus is on keeping your natural teeth strong for life, our practice is the perfect home for your dental care.

Why do I need a check-up every six months if I feel fine?

Prevention is always less expensive (and more comfortable) than repairing damage. Many dental problems, such as early decay and gum disease, are “silent” and offer few warning signs until they are advanced. Regular visits allow us to monitor your oral health and catch these issues early, stopping them before they become big trouble.

The difference is the extent of the damage. A tooth-coloured filling is used to repair decay that impacts only a small portion of the tooth. If you have severe damage or a large crack, you will likely need a dental crown. A crown fits securely over the remaining structure, completely covering the tooth like a protective helmet to restore its strength.

While general guidelines often suggest age one, at South Coast Dental, we find that children often have the best experience starting around three years old. At this age, we can take a look to ensure development is on target while creating positive feelings. Our goal is to make the appointment fun so your child looks forward to visiting us.

Years ago, silver amalgam was the standard. Today, we prefer composite (white) fillings because they match your natural tooth colour, won’t leak over time, and are metal-free. If your old fillings are intact, you don’t have to replace them. However, if you want a more aesthetic, natural-looking smile, ask us about upgrading to composite restorations.
