What Is Wisdom Tooth Removal?

Wisdom tooth removal is a common oral surgery procedure to extract the four permanent adult teeth located at the back corners of your mouth. These teeth, or “third molars,” often lack the space to grow in properly, causing them to become “impacted” (stuck beneath the gum or bone). This can lead to pain, infection, and damage to neighboring teeth.

At South Coast Dental, we take a proactive and gentle approach to this procedure. Unlike a standard extraction, wisdom tooth removal often requires surgical precision to navigate complex root structures. We utilize state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to map the position of your teeth relative to nerves, ensuring a safe removal process that prioritizes your long-term oral health and comfort.

While not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed, it is the recommended solution for patients where the teeth are causing active issues or pose a risk to future dental health.

Wisdom Tooth Removal FAQs

Get clarity before your consultation.

How do I know if my wisdom teeth are 'impacted' before I feel pain?

You often can’t tell without a professional exam. In Barbados, we see many patients whose wisdom teeth are growing horizontally under the gum. At South Coast Dental, we use digital X-rays to spot these “impacted” teeth early, preventing them from damaging your healthy adjacent teeth or causing the jaw issues mentioned above.

We prioritize your comfort. Depending on your needs, we offer local anesthetic to completely numb the area, nitrous oxide gas (laughing gas) to help you relax, or general anesthesia for a completely sleep-like experience. You won’t feel a thing during the extraction.

Yes. The younger you are, the more flexible the jawbone is and the faster your tissues regenerate. By removing problematic wisdom teeth in your teens or early twenties at our Christ Church office, you significantly reduce the risk of complications and enjoy a much shorter recovery time.

A dry socket is simply when the healing clot is disturbed. It’s rare, but we prevent it by giving every South Coast Dental patient a specific “Post-Op Blueprint.” By avoiding straws and local favorites like spicy or crunchy foods for a few days, most of our patients heal perfectly without any issues.

Most patients require about 48 to 72 hours of downtime. While you’ll want to avoid strenuous activity (like surfing or heavy lifting) for a few days to ensure proper healing, you’ll be back to your normal Bajan routine before you know it. We provide a full recovery guide during your consultation.
