What Are Dental Crowns and Bridges?

A dental bridge is a fixed appliance used to replace one or more missing teeth. It literally “bridges the gap” in your smile by anchoring a custom-made artificial tooth (pontic) to the natural teeth or implants on either side.

Unlike dentures, which are removable, a bridge is permanently cemented in place. At South Coast Dental, we custom-craft our bridges from high-quality porcelain to ensure they look and feel just like your natural teeth. This restores your ability to chew and speak properly while maintaining the natural shape of your face.

Replacing missing teeth is about more than just aesthetics; it is vital for your long-term oral health.

What is the difference between a bridge and a partial denture?

The biggest difference is stability. A partial denture is removable; you take it out to clean it and sleep. A dental bridge is a fixed restoration. It is permanently cemented to your natural teeth or implants, meaning it does not slip, click, or need to be removed at night. It feels and functions much more like your natural teeth.

Ignoring a gap is risky for your oral health. Without the support of the missing tooth, your remaining teeth will begin to shift and drift into the empty space. This can cause bite misalignment, jaw pain (TMJ issues), and increase your risk of gum disease and decay in hard-to-clean areas.

Both are excellent options. A dental implant replaces the tooth root and stands alone, which is often the gold standard as it doesn’t affect neighboring teeth. A dental bridge is a great alternative if you want a non-surgical solution or if the neighboring teeth already need crowns. We will help you decide which is best for your anatomy and budget.

Because a bridge is a single unit, you cannot floss between the replacement tooth and the anchor teeth in the usual way. You will need to use a floss threader, a superfloss, or a water flosser to clean underneath the artificial tooth (pontic). We will demonstrate the proper technique to keep your gums healthy.

We prioritize your comfort. Preparing the anchor teeth for a bridge is very similar to getting a crown. We use local anaesthesia to ensure the area is completely numb before we begin. You should feel no pain during the procedure.

Dental bridges are highly durable. With excellent oral hygiene and regular check-ups at South Coast Dental, a bridge can last 10 to 15 years or longer. Avoiding chewing on hard objects (like ice or pens) will help extend the life of your restoration.

Yes. We use high-quality porcelain that is custom-shaded to match your natural enamel perfectly. Once placed, your bridge will blend seamlessly with your smile, and no one will know you had a missing tooth.
